Amorphous solid dispersions for nasal delivery - Powder formulation and particle engineering considerations
Nasal powders have been recognized as an opportunity to improve stability and residence time on the nasal mucosa compared with liquids, where amorphous powders favor the formulation of poorly soluble drugs. This article shows two case studies where different particle engineering and formulation strategies were evaluated, focusing on nasal delivery of poorly soluble drugs.Ìý
Spray drying showed to be a suitable technology to manufacture particles for nasal delivery with high deposition on the turbinate’s area. Additionally, amorphous solid dispersions, typically used to enhance oral absorption of poorly soluble drugs, are a promising formulation strategy to improve the onset of action of poorly soluble drugs for nasal delivery.
